Love’s Baby Soft was my first of many perfume obsessions when I was a teen. Over the years my bedroom became littered with a fragrance collection that could rival Sephora. The daily norm was a few sprays on my skin and clothing before heading out. While I thought I was smelling fine I’m sure I was suffocating everyone within a mile.
What’s in a fragrance?
As I became older and somewhat wiser I began educating myself about safer products and ways to live a healthy, toxin-free life. Slowly I began to remove toxins from my daily routine. That colossal collection of perfume bottles was one of the first things to go when I discovered that fragrances can be made up of more than 100 chemicals, all of which can be kept secret by manufacturers. I had no way of knowing what I was spraying on my skin!
Unfortunately, there’s very little regulation in the fragrance industry. Companies are allowed to hide their entire ingredient list, including any combination of more than 3,100 synthetic scent chemicals. If you see “fragrance” or “parfum” on the label that likely means “I’ve decided not to tell you what’s in my product”. Companies can also use additives like phthalates, petrochemicals, and oxybenzone—and they don’t need to tell us.
We want to know what’s in our fragrance
Transparency is such a simple concept. It makes perfect sense that companies should use ingredients they are proud of and list them on the label.
Fortunately, there are a few companies out there doing good things when it comes to fragrance. Goddess Garden is one of them.
Goddess Garden Founder, Nova Covington, was inspired to start her company after her daughter had serious reactions to the synthetic chemicals in conventional body care products. When she founded Goddess Garden she placed ingredient transparency at the top of her priority list and it remains there today.
When it comes to toxic-free fragrance Goddess Garden has you covered. Goddess Garden just rolled out a new line of essential-oil roll-on perfumes. The perfumes are scented with pure essential oils and are free from synthetic fragrances, phthalates, and mystery chemicals.
When it comes to toxic-free fragrance @GoddessGarden has you covered. #GoodScentsClick To TweetThe new line includes five scents: Lavender Sky, Citrus Sunrise, Wildflower, Amber Fire , and Rainforest that are all made with certified-organic essential oils. All the perfumes come in a glass bottle with a convenient rollerball for easy application. The highlight for me was seeing ALL the ingredients listed on the packaging. Finally transparency!
I’ve tried them all many times and my favorite is the Lavender Sky. If you’re a fan of a lavender fragrance you’re going to love this.
Here are a few things you can do to clean up your fragrance routine:
- Buy from companies that disclose all ingredients
- Ask companies that don’t disclose their ingredients to change their policy
- Take action! Tell the fragrance industry to stop keeping fragrance ingredients a secret!
I’m curious- what’s your favorite fragrance?
