Many of us strive to eat organic food, clean with non-toxic supplies and use chemical-free personal care products. We even search for safer options for mattresses and bedding. We’ve covered all bases when it comes to protecting our families, but have we given any thought to the safety of the furniture found in our home?
There’s a good chance that conventional furniture purchased from a mainstream retailer could be loaded with toxic chemicals. Are you wondering how something like this could happen? The Toxic Substances Control Act is a badly broken federal law that doesn’t prevent toxic chemicals from being used in the cushions, glue, wood and fabric dyes.
New safety regulations are beginning to help make the search for chemical-free furniture a bit easier. Furniture manufacturers selling in the state of California must label products that contain flame retardants. This is a step in the right direction for consumers searching for safer options but we still have a long way to go.
Introducing The Organic Mattress (safer furniture, mattresses and more!)
Many of us spend hours sitting on our furniture (our sofa is a family favorite). Our chairs and sofas are covered with conventional fabrics that can be highly toxic both to us and the planet.
I’ve been working with a with a local Massachusetts shop, The Organic Mattress, for many years. This store started off as an organic mattress store and have expanded their products to include non-toxic furniture, furnishings, and accessories. And they ship throughout the US!
Their non-toxic mattress collection is expansive and impressive with 6 lines of mattresses to choose from.
They’ve also added a furniture line called Pure Upholstery, which highlights furniture that is handmade from organic and natural ingredients without chemical flame retardants! The collection includes sofas, chairs, and loveseats made with non-toxic materials and safer fabrics.
How to Buy Safer Furniture
If you’re on the hunt for non-toxic furniture here are some tips.
How long do you want it to last?
Buying non-toxic pieces to add to your home is an investment, but it’s one that will last. If you plan to have your sofa/chair for the longterm making an investment upfront is the way to go. Safer sofas and chairs are generally more expensive but they are quality pieces. You’ll need to evaluate whether keeping toxic chemicals out of your home is worth the added expense.
Determine a budget
How much do you want to spend on your new piece of furniture? Amortize the price of the sofa/chair over the anticipated life of the piece. You can now determine if a purchase makes financial sense.
How often will you use your new sofa/chair?
Will you or your family take power naps on a new sofa? Think about the amount of time you’ll be spending on a new chair or sofa. What room will it be in? Will you be spending time on it daily?
Go to a reputable retailer
Time to ask questions! You have a right to know if there are toxic chemicals in your new sofa.
The Organic Mattress is truly a hidden gem in Massachusetts. They’re not a large corporation, just two people who saw the need for a different kind of mattress and furniture store in the Northeast. They do the research for us and find bedding and furniture that is good for people and the planet.
